"ALEXYZ" - Alex Raphael Fernandes:
Alex Raphael Fernandes, a.k.a. Alexyz needs no introduction to Goans. Whether it is the editorial cartoon , sportoon or his satirical verse. Alexyz’ presence has dominated Goan dailies, weeklies and magazines for over two decades. His work has matured like good old port wine. Ideas sizzle relentlessly in his fertile brain.
The poet/painter/social/cultural activist and cartoonist also gets embroiled in uncovering moss-covered traditions and social issues, even getting himself arrested during the Konkani language agitation in Goa.
Brought up in Bombay (Mumbai), India, Alex studied at the Dr. Antonio Da Silva H. School, Dadar, graduated from St. Xaviers College and specialised in Advertising & Public Relations from Bhavans College, Bombay. He has worked variously as a typist, stenographer, storekeeper, copy writer and art teacher.
Presently a cartoonist with Gomantak Times, Goa Today and the Konkani V. Ixtt, he has had literally thousands of cartoons published in the Readers Digest, Indian Express, Illustrated Weekly, Sportsweek etc. in Bombay. Herald , Navhind Times, Goa Today, Goan Observer etc. in Goa.
His publications have included SPORTOONS (India Book House). HOWZZAT ! A Century of Cricket Cartoon (Marine Sports, Bombay). GOA - PARADISE LOST (Caritas, Goa) O HUMOR GOEZ: (Humorgrafe, Lisbon). He has been invited to hold exhibitions abroad in the Gulf, Portugal, England, Switzerland, and in India at Bombay and Bangalore. Alex has had several one man shows in Goa and has encouraged many talented, young artists to have shows with him.
His distinct line has been admired immensely at home and abroad. On the last occasion when he toured Portugal, Alexyz was chosen from 50 continental cartoonists and awarded a Special Prize for Humour. His caricature and verse of the legendary cricketer Don Bradman adorns the Bradman Museum in New South Wales, Australia. But he deems his exhibition in the House of Commons, London as the height of his exciting career.
Apart from reviving the traditional Sao Joao Boat Festival and initiating the Festival of Plants and Flowers in his village of Siolim, he has organized classical concerts
at the feet of the imposing statue of the composer Ludwig Van Beethoven in Siolim. He recently organized the much applauded week-long event Alexyz e os Amigos
showcasing Goa’s art and culture at the Fundacao Oriente in Panjim. A keen hiker, he has even trekked through the Himalaya mountains.
Stay tuned for updates and breaking news!
